This has been a particularly exciting year in the world of literacy education as schools across the country worked to integrate elements from the “Science of Reading” into teaching. We’ll plan for a lively discussion of schools’ continuum of literacy instruction and discuss how our recent study of “Shifting the Balance” help us consider all of the vital elements that go into developing skilled readers.

The Council of Darien School Parents, on behalf of the PTO, is excited to invite you to attend Dr. Marc Brackett’s parent workshop on December 6th at 7pm in the DHS Auditorium.
Dr. Brackett is the founder and director of the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence and co-creator of RULER, an evidence-based approach to social-emotional learning. After a year of professional development, teachers are implementing RULER in every classroom in the district. Have you heard about the ‘mood meter’ or the ‘class charter’? That’s RULER! Dr. Brackett is also the author of “Permission to Feel: Unlocking the Power of Emotions to Help Our Kids, Ourselves, and Our Society Thrive.” The workshop will be an interactive discussion with parents that focuses on wellness, mental health and social-emotional learning. Gingerbread Houses are back! Let’s get into the holiday spirit with one of our favorite OX Ridge traditions. We are excited to be hosting the event in person! Each child will get their own gingerbread house from DiMare’s to decorate from start to finish with icing and candy!
Sign up on pay4schoolstuff by November 25th for a slot during Parent-Teacher Conference week (Nov 29th-Dec 2) from 1:30-2:30pm in the Ox Ridge Cafeteria. We are thrilled to offer you an opportunity to hear Dr. Yeap Ban Har, a world-renowned mathematics professor, speak in Darien. On Wednesday, November 9, at 7:00 p.m. in the Middlesex Middle School auditorium, Dr. Yeap Ban Har will present a workshop for parents on the background of Singapore Math and how it ties into teaching and learning in Darien.
Dr. Yeap Ban Har taught mathematics education courses at the National Institute of Education, a teacher education institute in Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. His research interests include problem solving and problem posing, early numeracy, and teacher professional development. He holds a Master of Education, a Master of Arts in Southeast Asian Studies, and a doctorate in mathematics education. He has served on the editorial board of two mathematics education journals—Mathematical Thinking and Learning and The Mathematics Educator.”

Dr. Yeap is spending several days with our elementary and middle school teachers during the week of November 7th, providing professional development in strategies that engage all students in higher-level mathematical thinking.

The Ox Ridge Edible Garden is a wonderful tradition at Ox Ridge and we are so thankful to this year’s volunteer chairs, Jeanne Zimmer and Clair Raver. During construction, the gardens will be displaced. Don’t worry – Architect, SLAM, has allocated a beautiful new space in the plans for the new building – we will bring back this tradition in 2022! If anyone would like any of the items from garden space, please fill out thisgoogle form. If there is more interest than items, we will conduct a raffle. Deadline to enter is June 11.
WOW! What a success our Field Day Marathon was! All together, Ox Ridge traveled 1,219.08 miles!! We loved seeing all of your pictures as you rode, biked, ran, and even swam towards our collective goal. First Selectman Declares State of Emergency for the Town of Darien Business and Public Facilities/Programs Closure Notice
At 2:00pm today, in response to and in coordination with federal, state and local agencies, First Selectman Jayme Stevenson has issued a Town of Darien State of Emergency. This action has been taken to augment the Town’s response efforts to slow the spread of the COVID-19 and to underscore to the Darien community the seriousness of the virus crisis.
Beginning at 8:00pm on Monday, March 16, Governor Lamont, in a coordinated action with the governors of New York and New Jersey, has ordered the temporary closure of all bars, restaurants, gyms, fitness centers and similar public exercise studios, and movie theatres. Restaurants and bars that serve food will be temporarily required to move to takeout and delivery service only. Bars that do not serve food will be temporarily required to close. All other local businesses, including grocery stores and pharmacies remain open at this time. Staff and customers should practice social distancing while shopping and working. Gatherings of more than 50 people are prohibited.
These measures are being taken to help ensure the health and safety of our residents through social distancing and to slow the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19) in our region.
Effective, Tuesday March 17, all public facilities including park and beach playgrounds, school playgrounds, Weed Beach Paddle Hut, restrooms, water fountains and train station buildings will be closed. All Parks & Recreation winter programs are canceled. Tennis and paddle courts remain open for public use. Spring programming will be evaluated as more information about virus conditions becomes available. Darien and Noroton Heights Rail Station buildings will be closed to the public until further notice. New Haven Line service is still operational. Ticket machines, parking machines and elevators remain operational. See the MTA Metro North website (www.web.mta.info) for train schedule information.
Darien Town Hall remains fully operational during normal business hours through limited access and by appointment only. All non-essential municipal meetings are canceled until further notice. Please refer to the Town of Darien website (www.darienct.gov) for online services.
